JOJOS BIZARRE ADVENTURE MANGA JONATHAN SERIES
This is how the series moved on to the rambunctious and clever Joseph Joestar in the late 1930s, Jotaro Kujo in the 1980s during his trek to Egypt and Josuke and Giorno in Japan and Italy respectively at the turn of the millennium. Jonathan's death means the story can jump around from one time period and setting to another, as opposed to remaining in the late Victorian period the entire time. Jonathan came first, but he wasn't be alone, and this allowed later Joestars to take their turn fighting battles against evil. Jonathan's death set the series apart, making it clear that this manga series features the whole Joestar family as its protagonist, not just one man.

This is a radical move by any standard, especially in the 1980s, and this unorthodox strategy was a sure way to set JoJo's Bizarre Adventure apart from its peers, like Fist of the North Star. RELATED: Dragon Ball Super: Goku's Most Powerful Form Just Failed Spectacularly Pass The Batonįor the sake of a fresh narrative to readers' attention, author Hirohiko Araki killed off the protagonist himself. Few, if any other characters in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, have cleared this high bar in their heroics, but since Jonathan did it first, that creates the expectation (and hope) that other characters like Joseph, Jotaro and Giorno can do the same. Jonathan gave his life to save all of theirs, and in so doing, cemented himself as a selfless hero for all time. Given the circumstances of that battle aboard the ship, there was no other way to stop the rampage of Dio's severed head, and Erina and all the passengers were in grave danger. Sacrifice is an admirable trait, and Jonathan Joestar made the biggest sacrifice of all. Jonathan isn't an anti-hero he was designed to check off all the boxes of morality, and this included his final (and greatest) moment. Any hero who runs from a fight, shrinks from duty or betrays their people is branded a monster or a coward, and Jonathan would never do that. In that sense, a hero like Jonathan Joestar is an avatar of all that is good among the people, and that hero is expected to pay any price for that job. A hero is the people's will coalesced into a single figure.

Such heroes are not meant to win battles for personal glory they are fighting for someone or some thing else, whether it's their family, their village, their nation or even the planet. Folk heroes, knights, samurai and more are expected to embody the virtues of courage, hope, compassion, discipline, upstanding morality and self-sacrifice. Heroes are expected to live up to a whole list of admirable traits.
